About the studio
A small studio with a simple thesis.
Artificial intelligence is becoming infrastructural. We think it should be built with the interests of ordinary people at the centre — and we've made that the whole point of the studio.
The thesis
The most important technology of our time shouldn't belong to the fewest people.
Whimbytes is an independent, self-funded studio. We are not a research lab, and we are not chasing a market for its own sake. We are a small group of people who think the benefits of AI are being distributed too narrowly, and who want to spend their working lives correcting that — one honest tool at a time.
That means we care about who a product is for before we care about what it can do. It means we treat restraint as a feature and trust as something earned slowly. And it means being candid about what we are still figuring out.
How we work
Deliberately
We would rather ship one thing that lasts than ten that don't. Speed is a tool, not a value; we use it where it serves the person using the product, and refuse it where it doesn't.
In the open, up to a point
We share our thinking and our limits honestly. We don't announce what isn't real, and we don't dress up uncertainty as confidence.
Answerable to people
Every choice we make gets judged by a simple question: does this leave the person in front of us better off, and no more exposed than before? If the answer is no, we change the choice.
Who we are
Small on purpose.
Whimbytes is a small, independent team. Staying small is a choice: it keeps us close to the people we build for, and it keeps the incentives simple. We are not in a hurry to become anything other than useful.
If that sounds like something you'd want to be part of — or a company you'd want to work with — we'd like to hear from you.
